We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

In each location, we’ve chosen the best options possible. Many of our Casual Inns have just started catering to Western travelers and often don’t offer Western-style service and amenities yet. These hotels, while at times humble and quirky, offer comfort, style and service. Please note that the Pindaya Inle Inn and Amara Mountain Resort, while comfortable and clean, have much more modest guest rooms than the other hotels on this trip.

The Premiere Inns on this trip provide all the amenities typically found on Backroads trips, although they can be large resorts which lack some intimacy and charm.

Walking & Hiking in an Emerging World

Myanmar has emerged as an exciting new destination, but travel here can be challenging. Myanmar is very much a developing country, where the scarcity of resources and different attitudes can sometimes be jarring and may require more hardiness than on other trips. Navigating Myanmar on foot is both a physical and cultural adventure that requires patience and humor—and it’s part of what makes the trip so memorable! Though the route distances may be relatively short, the terrain, trail conditions and significant swings in temperatures can make activity more physically demanding.

Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter al-ways within reach. But it’s important to remember that even all the efforts of your Trip Leaders can’t replace a poorly maintained trail or change the service standards here. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you’ll enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Day 1 Witness firsthand the exciting changes unfolding in Myanmar  Saunter through an eclectic mixture of historic architecture in colorful Yangon, from stately British colonial structures to ancient Asian merchant houses to the stunning 6th-century Shwedagon Pagoda  Soak up the age-old ambience of this Buddhist temple, the nation's most sacred religious structure.

Days 2-3 Delve into an ancient era, strolling amid some 2,000 pagodas and temples in Bagan Compared to the ruins of Angkor and Chichen Itza, Bagan will feel wild and undiscovered  Hop aboard a horse-drawn cart and travel to a remote site for a marvelous sunset viewing   Cruise by traditional boat down the Irrawaddy River and explore a local market Enjoy the amenities at our luxurious hotel.

Days 4-5 Interact with locals, who are proud to share their culture as Myanmar finally engages the world  Fly from Bagan to Heho  Discover markets and spiritual enclaves in the untouched mountains and valleys of the Shan State Venture into a cave containing an impressive collection of Buddha statues and shrines  Hike deep into the forest, where you'll have the opportunity to bathe friendly pachyderms in the river at an elephant sanctuary.

Days 6-8 Descend from the hills to heavenly Inle Lake, a delight to explore by boat  Marvel at centuries-old pagodas, floating gardens and communities built upon stilts on the lake  Visit silk weavers, silversmiths and a private home in one of Inle's floating villages.

Guests Reviews About This Trip

After 15 years of traveling through most of Asia, Burma is still my favorite travel experience. Why? It has such a deep and complex history and fascinating culture, yet remains so unknown to most of us. Because of that, every interaction - from visiting ancient ruins to having tea with a local - is revelatory. And for now, at least, it remains its own place. And the people are wonderfully hospitable, too!
