From the Canal to the Caribbean Coast
A forested wonderland ringed with white-sand beaches, Panama will astonish your whole family. Paddle through rain forest down the Chagres River, listening for howler monkeys and watching for the bright, unmistakable flash of a toucan’s bill. Set sail for a day of beach time—swimming, snorkeling, relaxing. The engineering wonder of the Panama Canal dazzles the mind. The streets of Casco Viejo and ruins of 16th-century Fort San Lorenzo whisper of the country's Spanish colonial past. And the warmth of the nation's indigenous cultures welcomes you to a place you may never want to leave.
Days 1-2 Visit an indigenous Emberá village and learn about this community's culture and traditional cuisine Catch a glimpse of sloths, birds, and monkey’s on a hike through Panama City’s only wildlife refuge Take a walking tour of Casco Viejo’s historic plazas and cathedrals.
Day 3 Marvel at the Panama Canal, a 100-year-old engineering feat of epic proportions Find out about the canal's historical significance, its construction and watershed during a private guided tour of the Miraflores Locks museum Take in the beauty of the Chagres River on a peaceful downstream paddle amid lush green vegetation and brilliant tropical birds Keep an eye out for toucans, monkeys and maybe even a kinkajou as you hike to Gamboa’s observation tower, where you can see the sprawling rain forest and Panama Canal from above.
Days 4-6 Splash in the Pacific and relax at resplendent tropical retreats Surrounded by rain forest, pedal to the haunting ruins of a Spanish fort that dates back to the 16th century Stroll the quiet streets of Portobelo, a sleepy fishing village that was once a vital stop in the Spanish silver trade route Set sail for a day of snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing on the impossibly white sand of Playa Blanca.

Guest Reviews About This Trip
One of the words that comes to mind when I think about Panama is "diversity." For such a small country, the array of landscapes, plants and animals here is truly astonishing! And I think our Panama Multisport trips, with their great blend of activities offer the ideal introduction to such variety. In fact, you'll probably come away from your trip having done and seen more with Backroads in six days than you'd experience in a couple weeks on your own!- Regional Manager, Latin America
