Hidden Gems from Cloud Forest to Volcanoes & the Pacific Coast

Costa Rica or Nicaragua. Nicaragua or Costa Rica. Which was more awe-inspiring? The steaming volcano or the three waterfalls in the cloud forest? Which was more delicious, the fresh roasted coffee from the plantation or the chocolate you learned how to make at our treehouse resort? Was it the biking or the walks? The volcanic mineral springs or the rain forest? The monkeys, the iguanas or the sloths? Which was the funniest to see? Opinions will vary. But this adventure will give your family plenty of stories and lots to debate.

On-Your-Own Activities

During the trip there’s time for you to enjoy one of Costa Rica’s favorite activities, zip-lining. This activity is often a highlight for those who choose to do it, but as it’s not to everyone’s liking it’s not included in the cost of the trip and participation is at your own risk.

Adventures in an Emerging World

Nicaragua has emerged as an exciting new destination, but travel here can be challenging. Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter always within reach. But it’s important to remember that even all the efforts of your Trip Leaders can’t replace a poorly maintained road or revolutionize service standards. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you’ll enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Days 1-2 Soak up views of Poás, Irazú and Barva Volcanoes as we journey through Costa Rica's fertile Meseta Central Stroll on a coffee estate and observe the coffee-making process Walk in the cloud forest near our hotel to discover three beautiful waterfalls Rafting on the Sarapiquí River, there's no telling what you might spot - sloths, iguanas, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous bird species make their homes here Hike at Tirimbina Reserve, where you can cross what's reputed to be one of the longest suspension bridges in Costa Rica.

Day 3 Bid adiós to Costa Rica and fly to Ometepe Island, a World Biosphere Reserve in the middle of Lake Nicaragua Bike around the island, with Concepción Volcano looming in the distance and lush flora greeting you at every turn Kick off your shoes at the lakeshore or journey into the tropical forest for a soak in a volcanic mineral spring Ferry to San Jorge on the mainland, where our ocean-view hotel awaits.

Day 4 Enjoy a boat ride up the coast, stopping to swim in the Pacific along the way  Take a peek into Nicaraguan agricultural life at a working farm - collect eggs, milk cows and pound corn for fresh tortillas!  Walk in a tropical dry forest, watching and listening for its avian residents Explore your surroundings at our treehouse-style hotel.

Days 5-6 Traverse coastal hills dotted with white plumeria, Nicaragua's national flower  Kids delve into the secrets of one of the world's favorite treats - chocolate! Ease into your morning with yoga before embarking on a hike Enjoy an afternoon of leisure or optional activities like horseback riding or golf  Learn how to make your own souvenirs from the gourds of the jicaro tree  Take a walk through a village, where fishing, farming - and now surfing - are a way of life.
