A Nordic Adventure in the Land of the Inuit, Sled Dogs & Glaciers
It's been more than 1,000 years since Viking Erik the Red sailed from his Icelandic home to a vast wilderness at the edge of the world - a remote and untouched land he lyrically dubbed Greenland (even though Iceland's green and Greenland's icy!). Don't be surprised if you enjoy a similar sense of discovery during your trip, because these two northern realms still have the power to captivate the 21st-century consciousness. Here, glaciers loom larger than life. Waterfalls roar and icebergs crack. And indigenous Inuit rely on the intrepid sled dog as they've done for millennia. Welcome to an epic week on the Arctic Circle - your family's very own Norse saga come to life.
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Meals & Service StandardsBecause agriculture is limited in this rugged region, produce can be in short supply - while meat and seafood is abundant, fresh and local.
Also note that due to Greenland's remoteness, you may not always experience the level of convenience or service that we expect. If you can be flexible and approach the region with an open mind, you’ll enjoy your trip to the fullest!
Days 1-2 Get set for six thrilling days of rich culture and sublime natural sights Marvel at Reykjavík's natural beauty on a scenic spin along a coastal path Head to Snaefellsnes Peninsula, called "Iceland in miniature" because it contains many of the country's quintessential landscapes Youngsters descend 100 feet underground on an exhilarating lava cave tour Pedal and hike along the coast past marvelous moss-covered rock formations, windswept beaches and craggy seaside cliffs.
Days 3-4 Our flight to Greenland gives you an eagle's perspective on the landscape In the atmospheric arctic town of Ilulissat, perhaps you'll check out a museum or visit the busy fishing pier A postcard-perfect hike through a typical arctic coastal landscape takes you to Oqaatsut This community of hunters and fishermen boasts twice as many sled dogs as people!
Days 5-6 Walk along the sea to witness the staggering Ilulissat Icefjord, a World Heritage site containing some of the world's largest and most active glaciers Soak up the stunning blue-green color of the lakes and ocean, listen to the intense cracking of the calving glacier, and consider the remoteness of this place, with no roads linking it to the outside world Admire the otherworldly white nights of the midnight sun Then greet the day with an exciting flight-seeing trip back to Reykjavík.
