An Adventurer's Playground from Manuel Antonio to the Nicoya Peninsula

What's the best way to experience Costa Rica? May we suggest: jungle hiking, mountain biking, surfing, Class III river rafting, toucan watching, howler monkey spotting, blue morpho butterfly viewing, fresh pineapple tasting, Costa Rican coffee sipping, Pacific breeze feeling, national park strolling, catch-of-the-day indulging, breathtaking vista gazing and deep deep sleeping. But that's just a suggestion.

On-Your-Own Activities

During the trip there’s time for you to enjoy some of Costa Rica’s favorite activities, such as zip-lining, horseback riding and surfing. These activities are often a highlight for those who choose to do them, but as they’re not to everyone’s liking they’re not included in the cost of the trip and participation is at your own risk.

Days 1-2 Grab your paddles and explore the coastline in your sea kayak  As you glide through  the calm waters, soak up the gorgeous views of rock faces and lush forests Spot a wealth of wildlife with a local naturalist in Manuel Antonio National Park, from monkeys, lizards and iguanas to butterflies and toucans Craving a new perspective? Opt for a zip-line adventure through the jungle canopy.

Day 3 Put your legs in four-wheel drive for an epic hike off the beaten path In the beautiful Savegre Valley, a local friend invites us home for a Costa Rican snack  Stop to visit a community project and cool off in a hidden cascade-fed swimming hole Kick back on your private deck in our blissfully secluded safari jungle lodge.

Day 4 Make a splash during a thrilling white-water rafting excursion on Río Savegre  Enjoy a toucan's-eye view during a scenic flight to the Nicoya Peninsula  Bike along some of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches and dramatic coastline Luxuriate at remote Hotel Punta Islita, an Andrew Harper favorite and heavenly tropical escape.

Days 5-6 Time by the pool, at the spa, on horseback or on a surfboard? Up to you!  Hike up to a mirador for stellar vistas of the ocean  On a visit to the Ara Project, learn about efforts to restore macaw populations to their historic range in Costa Rica  View works by Costa Rican and international artists at Latin America's first open-air museum - a great spot to buy local crafts Swap stories over a festive barbecue dinner on the beach.

Guest Reviews About This Trip

A magical journey exploring the extraordinary splendor of green and lush Costa Rica with kindred spirits...our fellow Backroaders! The story of this place, a natural, peaceful and biodiverse wilderness with beautiful vistas, protected rain forest canopies, river currents and azure seas plus the brilliant color of creatures and flora was impeccably presented by our exceptional leaders. Backroads is the essence of unsurpassed quality in their planning, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution of an adventure. Around every bend with Backroads there is consistently a sense of respect for our Earth and the warm hospitality of cultures with a true sense of community. Our highest commendation to everyone at Backroads!

Fantastic trip. The best word is "seamless." Considering being in a foreign country, having to take plane rides, and multiple destinations and activities, things moved along like they were following a French train schedule. The accommodations were great; I loved the locales. I've already highly recommended Backroads to several people.
James C. - Lafayette, LA
This was simply the best vacation that I have taken to date, and it will be difficult to match or surpass it. The activities were challenging and fun; the location was beautiful; the group was wonderful; and the leaders were first-rate. Thank you!

There is a lot to experience in Costa Rica and this trip is nothing short of action-packed! We have kept route distances short to ensure you have plenty of time to take advantage of the multitude of activities available. While distances suggest a Level 1-2 trip, we've rated it 1-3 instead due to the abundance of activities, as well as the heat, which require a bit more get-up-and-go. Please note that Route Ratings are for single sport activities and may not reflect the level of combined activities.
