Veneto Biking Vacations

Veneto Biking

From the Foothills of the Dolomites to the Canals of Venice

Stretching from the foothills of the Dolomites to the canals of Venice, the Veneto region was once the retreat of wealthy Venetian nobles who commissioned such masters as Paolo Veronese and Andrea Palladio to design and embellish their country estates. Riding along tranquil stradine (small roads) and over the pre-Alps, you’ll pass fields of corn, terraced vineyards and Renaissance towns. Come evening, you’ll live like Venetian nobility in luxurious lodgings and feast on regional specialties such as fresh seafood, creamy polenta and crisp pinot grigio.

Day 1 Asolo

Meet in Bassano del Grappa  Ride through the foothills of the Dolomites to Asolo, known as the “town of a hundred horizons,” thanks to its inspiring hilltop location  Feast on a picnic of organic vegetables and artisan-cured meats from a local agriturismo.

Days 2-3 Follina

A gradual climb brings you to Maser and the 500-year-old Villa Barbaro, filled with extraordinary frescoes by Paolo Veronese  Follow the prosecco wine route through the verdant Valdobbiadene wine region, where premier prosecco is cultivated  Pedal the banks of the Piave River, immortalized in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms  Don’t miss Follina’s 12th-century Cistercian Abbey with its Gothic and Romanesque architecture.

Day 4 Rivarotta di Paisano

Tackle two substantial climbs as you leave Follina and weave your way through the Valdobbiadene region  After ascending through woods and terraced vineyards, enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped Dolomites peaks and the verdant valley below  Descend to the Veneto plain along quiet roads leading through sleepy villages and farming communities.

Days 5-6 Venice

Follow the Livenza River as it makes its way to the Adriatic Bike along meandering lanes, over canals and levees, past fertile fields and the marshland that characterizes the route to Caorle, a bustling seaside town  Continue to Punta Sabbioni, where a private boat awaits to whisks us to Venice  On a walking tour of Venice, learn about the architectural and cultural legacy of this once-great maritime republic.

Trip praise

The visits we made to wineries, Palladian villas and other venues were wonderful, and the local guides were amazing. Of course, the food was divine. Our leaders worked diligently, and on our last picnic, two of us who were not biking had a delightful time helping them with the picnic! Backroads is wonderful at making last minute adjustments such as these—plus your leaders are thoughtful, professional, and just "pushy" enough to help us prove to ourselves we really can make it over the next hill!
