Veneto Biking Vacations

Veneto Biking

From the Foothills of the Dolomites to the Friuli Wine Country

Stretching from the foothills of the Dolomites to the rolling landscape of Friuli, this new itinerary explores the Veneto once the retreat of wealthy Venetian nobles who commissioned such masters as Paolo Veronese and Andrea Palladio to design and embellish their country estates and the Friuli wine-lover's region. Riding along tranquil stradine (small roads) and over the pre-Alps, pass fields of corn, terraced vineyards and Renaissance towns. Come evening, settle in at welcoming lodgings and feast on regional specialties such as fresh seafood, creamy polenta and crisp pinot grigio.

Day 1 Asolo

Meet in Venice  Ride through the foothills of the Dolomites to Asolo, known as the "town of a hundred horizons," thanks to its inspiring hilltop location  Feast on a picnic of organic vegetables and artisan-cured meats from a local agriturisma.

Day 2 Follina

An invigorating downhill brings you to Maser and the 500-year-old Villa Barbaro, filled with extraordinary frescoes by Paolo Veronese  Pedal the banks of the Piave River, immortalized in Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms  Follow the wine route through the verdant Valdobbiadene wine region, where grapes for the revered premier prosecco are cultivated Don't miss Follina's 12th-century Cistercian Abbey with its Gothic and Romanesque architecture.

Day 3 Rivarotta di Pasiano

Head east toward the town of Vittorio Veneto, the site of the last battle between Italy and Austria-Hungary during World War I  On our ridge ride, take in the fantastic views of the surrounding countryside  After lunch, pedal the last few miles across the Piave Plain to our hotel, where you can relax and enjoy the splendid grounds.

Days 4-6 Capriva del Friuli

Welcome to Friuli, Italy's most northeastern corner and a region established only in 1963 Witness the vivid signs of Austrian and Slavic influence in the lifestyle, accents, folklore and cuisine Test your palate and try to perceive the nuances of the region's world-class wines such as müller-thurgau, tokai, ribolla gialla and riesling italiaco On a loop ride to Cividale, pedal the rolling hills of the Colli Orientale wine zone  Sit back and soak in the atmosphere of our unique accommodations a castle originally used as summer residence for Jesuits.

Trip praise

The visits we made to wineries, Palladian villas and other venues were wonderful, and the local guides were amazing. Of course, the food was divine. Our leaders worked diligently, and on our last picnic, two of us who were not biking had a delightful time helping them with the picnic! Backroads is wonderful at making last minute adjustments such as these - plus your leaders are thoughtful, professional, and just "pushy" enough to help us prove to ourselves we really can make it over the next hill!
