Travel through Time in Dynamic Eastern Germany

There are movies, documentaries, fiction, nonfiction, memoirs, legends and facts that tell Germany's story. But there's one perspective that's missing. Yours. Witness it. Ride the trail that once was the Berlin Wall. Experience the splendor of Dresden, a city once known as "Florence on the Elbe." Bike by lush forests, quaint old-world towns and quiet shimmering waterways. Be German, even for just a few days. Immerse yourself in all of it. The culture, the cuisine, the history, the humanity. And then read, watch and listen to the stories from a fresh perspective: your family's own.

Navigating Bike Paths

Germans are not only known for their passion for beer, but also for bikes. And that love of bikes has created an amazing labyrinth of bike paths and routes that extend throughout the country. Many of the paths we utilize on this trip are the equivalent of scenic byways, linking quaint villages and big cities alike. Navigating these intricate bike routes requires more attention to the directions than you might expect. Be prepared to make more stops than you usually would to ensure you’re on the right track, all the while experiencing the occasional rush of riding among many locals as they commute and run errands by bike.

These wonderful bike paths are refreshingly car-free, which means that there are short stretches of limited van support. Although most of the paths are smooth and paved, there are some sections of interlocking bricks, cobblestone and hard-packed dirt that can be muddy during downpours.

Guest Reviews About This Trip

This trip features a lot of variety, making it a really great choice for families. There's easygoing scenic riding in the countryside, a wealth of cultural connections, a bit of urban exploration and excellent cuisine (lots of kid-friendly food, too!). Among the highlights are a ride along the remains of the Berlin Wall, a visit to Potsdam (castles galore), the amazing palace built by Frederick the Great, Spreewald (known for its canals, gherkin fields and original Slavic population) and the incredibly picturesque Elbe Valley.
