From Cafayate's Dramatic Red Cliffs & Valleys to Thundering Iguazú Falls

You can't do this in many other places. Biking in some of the planet's remotest locales, delving into pre-Inca history, and still enjoying world-class wines. It's a tall order. But it's one that Northern Argentina fills easily, from the arid Calchaquí Valley to wondrous Iguazú Falls. Maybe you've explored other parts of Argentina. Or perhaps you're a first-time visitor. Either way, we think you'll love nothing more than venturing off the beaten path and exploring this land that never runs out of wonderful surprises.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Taste the local lifeblood of the Cafayate wine region  Ascend on road bikes through the subtropical forest of Las Yungas Biosphere Reserve Visit an artisanal cheese factory, in operation since the 1700s Overnight at a beautifully preserved 18th-century working estancia Ready for a challenge? Conquer a 10,000-foot pass as you pedal up to the arid Andean altiplano, studded with giant candelabra-like cacti Explore the archaeological site of Quilmes, once the largest pre-Columbian settlement in Argentina Enjoy the lively rhythms of Andean music and savor an exclusive dinner at a winery.

Days 3-5 Quebrada de Cafayate, a brilliant red- and gold-colored canyon punctuated with otherworldly rock formations  Learn how to sip mate - the national drink - like an Argentine After biking through Yungas subtropical forest, refuel on asado (barbecue) from the grill Local performers provide an enthusiastic folkloric demonstration  With an expert guide, walk through the stunning colonial city of Salta "La Linda" (The Beautiful) Fly from Salta to the tropical region of Iguazú.

Days 6-8 Venture to Iguazú Falls, one of the world's largest waterfalls and most breathtaking natural wonders  Walk to the powerful Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) falls, keeping an eye out for colorful birds, snake, turtles and caimans Bike through tropical Misiones Forest Arrive at the "Triple Frontier," where two rivers converge at the Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil borders   Two-wheel it to the village of the Mbaya indigenous tribe, who talk to us about their ancestral crafts, traditions and hopes for the future Pedal across the border for a look at the Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls, followed by a gourmet dinner at the hotel, perched just above the thundering cascade.

Guest Reviews About This Trip

We are so excited to bring you this active adventure in one of the most untouched regions of Argentina. We’ll explore the Yungas forest, the Andean pastures, and cycle between lunar landscapes in the Andes and the tropical regions of Iguazú. We’ll ride over a 10,000-foot pass to the highest-altitude vineyards in the world to sample some great Argentine wine. Then, the highlight of the trip: we'll explore Iguazú Falls - one of the seven wonders of nature and a UNESCO World Heritage Site - from both sides of the Argentina/Brazil border.
