The Western Wilderness

There’s a really good chance that nothing in your day-to-day life resembles a cowboy’s. You probably don’t hop on your horse to go to work. You don’t pass through alpine meadows or dramatically vertical peaks. Glacial lakes? Nope. We’re pretty sure your job title is not “Wrangler” or “River Guide.” But here’s your chance to play cowboy. Paddle the Snake River. Experience the most extraordinary geothermal activity of Yellowstone like an explorer. Stand in awe of the Tetons, Old Faithful, and the Upper Geyser Basin. Learn from the experts. Listen to geologists. So be a cowboy. Like you played as a kid. And do it all in the greatest playground a cowboy could ever want—the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Cowboy Up!

Accommodations & Service Standards

Jackson Lake Lodge, Old Faithful Inn and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel are fairly rustic national park lodges that reflect the natural surroundings of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. While these historic hotels offer simpler accommodations than the typical Backroads property, they provide unparalleled access to the best riding and hiking in the region. Please note that the guest rooms are not equipped with televisions or air-conditioning.

Generally speaking, service in the national parks can seem laid back when compared with the high standards of service found on other Backroads trips.

Interpretive Guides & Hiking With Your Leaders

The National Park Service limits the size of all groups and Grand Teton National Park doesn’t permit guided hiking. Accordingly, in Yellowstone National Park you’ll hike in small groups with Backroads leaders. In Grand Teton National Park you’ll hike with-out Backroads leaders or local guides. Your leaders will provide pre-walk briefings, maps and directions. We appreciate your coopera-tion with the park’s regulations.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Spectacular to a Fault  Explore Grand Teton National Park, a paradise of bluebell-strewn meadows, shimmering lakes, thick forests and sawtooth mountains Learn how these classic fault-block mountains were formed and why they’re considered "youngsters" at 12 million years of age Skilled river guides join us for an easygoing float on the Snake River, sharing with us their rich knowledge of geology, native flora and fauna - such as elk, moose, beavers, bald eagles, ospreys and black bears - and intriguing local lore.

Day 3 Home on the Range  Saddle up with local wranglers to experience the beauty of this rugged country from a new perspective Explore the terrain of the true West: sagebrush flatland,  forested hills and meandering streams through meadows speckled with wildflowers The jagged peaks of the Tetons create a truly majestic backdrop.

Day 4 Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot? If your feet are getting warm as you walk through the Upper Geyser Basin, you’re feeling the Yellowstone Hotspot - the collapsed cone of an ancient super-volcano Our local geologist explains how the heat from underground magma acts as a pressure cooker, fueling thousands of geysers, mud pots and steam vents, and creating temperatures in some spots that measure 700 times the global average!

Days 5-6 An American Serengeti  Home to one of North America's highest concentration of wildlife, the Lamar Valley is a vast wilderness where herds of elk, bison, antelope and even elusive packs of wolves roam freely in their natural habitat Join a seasoned naturalist on a full day of exploration by vehicle and on foot through this incredible area Been to Yellowstone before? You’re still certain to see something new thank to the ever-changing nature of the Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces - a living sculpture  Join our expert guides for a walk around the Upper Terraces, where microorganisms and various minerals add striking shades of orange, pink, yellow and green to the limestone terraces.

Guest Reviews About This Trip

I'd like to personally invite your family to join us in a pair of my favorite national parks - two of the most remarkable places in North America, and even the world! In the Tetons you'll be wowed by the splendor of sawtooth mountains. And in Yellowstone, it's always fun to watch kids' reactions as they begin to appreciate what's going on deep below their feet as the earth gurgles, burps, spouts, spews and bulges. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, deer, otters, bison, coyotes, black bears and numerous other critters during your trip!
