Backroads introduces ebikes For more get up and GO!
Berkeley, CA (July 12, 2013) Backroads, The World's #1 Active Travel Company, now offers electronic assist bikes—ebikes—on most of its North American, European, and Hawaiian cycling trips, making it even easier to take a Backroads trip than ever before.
When you ride an ebike, it's like having an extra pair of legs or a fairy godmother. If the riding gets tough, you simply press a button and—poof—you're up that hill in no time!
But you do have to pedal.
The beauty of an ebike is you can use the electronic boost—it's kind of like a turbo engine—as much or as little as you like. You still feel like you're riding a bike, though. You still get a workout. Ultimately, ebikes level the playing field for riders of varying fitness levels. They make Backroads trips accessible to more people. They allow couples and families who otherwise wouldn't ride at the same pace to ride together, comfortably, perhaps for the first time ever. Tom Hale, Backroads Founder and President, likes that. Very much.
"We're all about options," he says. "We cover the full spectrum of active travel, from the uber athlete to the newly active, and everything in between. We just want you to feel the wind in your hair. On your terms, not on our terms. Ebikes help you ride our routes on your terms."
Hale and his team will do just about anything they can do to support their guests in having the time of their lives in the outdoors. Offering ebikes is just one more way the Backroads team now supports its guests.
What is a Backroads ebike?
A Backroads ebike is not a moped. It is not a motorcycle. It's a regular, very high quality, titanium bicycle—the same bike, in fact, that Backroads offers to guests who want to ride without assistance. Backroads ebikes, however, have been retrofitted with BionX "pedal assist" technology, which is basically a battery pack that propels pedals forward. But not without torque from the rider. Riding an ebike is like riding a regular bike because it is a regular bike. Just more powerful.
Backroads ebikes have four levels of assist, ranging from a 35% boost (suitable for riding on level ground) to a 300% boost (for steep roads and strong head winds). They're quieter than a Prius (as in 100% silent) and unbelievably easy to operate. They're also fun! Even committed and seasoned road bikers like Bob Greeneisen, Backroads Global Logistics and Transportation Manager, love them. "You can't help but smile on an ebike," says Greeneisen. "It's like you have superpowers."
Not all ebikes are created equal, however. In fact, like regular road bikes, they vary tremendously. Having the right equipment for the right guest on the right trip and being able to support the needs of the ebike fleet is imperative, explains Hale. Rest assured, however, that Backroads—true to form—scoured the globe for the best ebike, tested it ruthlessly, and implemented a highly complex support program to deliver seamless service to all guests.
