Three- & Four-Day Getaways

Backroads responds to guests’ needs, economy with short getaways

BERKELEY, CA (June 2009)—Backroads, the world’s #1 active travel company, is sprinting into 2009 with new three- and four-day getaways to some of its most popular destinations.

New short getaways include biking trips in the San Juan Islands, Canadian Rockies, Colorado and France’s Loire Valley, as well as multisport trips in Bryce & Zion National Parks, the Canadian Rockies and the San Juan Islands.

Mike Flaherty, Backroads Regional Manager for California and Hawaii, explains that the expansion of weekend getaways is in response to demand for shorter trips. Backroads unveiled its California Wine Country Weekend biking trip in 2008, and it became an immediate hit, serving as a model for new offerings in 2009.

“Guests don’t necessarily have the time to take a full week of vacation,” Flaherty said. “Getaways are the perfect way to sample an active vacation before committing to something longer.”

Backroads’ new Loire Valley weekend trip is easily accessed through the gateway city of Paris, and can serve as a perfect country getaway when combined with a city stay. With more than two decades of experience running trips throughout France, Backroads will provide travelers with the same expert guidance, behind-the-scenes planning and superb service that are hallmarks of longer trips.

Those traveling to the Pacific Northwest will have easy access to new weekend biking and multisport trips in the San Juan Islands. The multisport trip is geared specifically to families. In the Canadian Rockies, weekend biking and family multisport trips enjoy exquisite lodging at the Post Hotel & Spa in Lake Louise.

No visit to Utah would be complete without admiring Bryce and Zion National Parks. Backroads’ four-day multisport trip is an ideal introduction into Utah’s spectacular southwest corner, where families can expect to be dazzled by red sandstone spires, hoodoos and monoliths

Other four-day trips explore Colorado on bike, Mississippi’s Natchez Trace on bike, and Death Valley National Park with biking and hiking.
