BERKELEY, CA—When it comes to safety and comfort, Backroads believes that nothing but the best will do. With custom-made bikes (including a fleet of aluminum bikes for kids!) and gear designed for travelers of all ages and sizes, outfitting an entire family is a snap.
We’ve Got Just Your Size
Depending on a Family Trip’s terrain, Backroads provides adults with road/touring bikes or mountain bikes. Hand-crafted from lightweight titanium or aluminum, each bike is durable and loaded with top-of-the-line features such as an ergonomic saddle and 27 easy-to-shift gears. Smaller-sized adults will appreciate Backroads’ custom extra-small bikes. All pedalers’ personal gear can be stowed in a bike bag attached to the handlebars or on the rear rack.
For the younger biking set, Backroads provides 20” and 24” children’s bikes—noticeably lighter than “off-the-shelf” bikes and geared for making riding more enjoyable. For riders ages 4-7 or up to 85 pounds, a Burley Piccolo trailercycle, an innovative attachment that turns an adult bicycle into a tandem, gives kids the chance to provide mom or dad some additional pedal power. And Burley d’Lite trailers make it possible to tow the youngest tots from an adult bike.
Headgear for Safety
As a protective measure, bicycle helmets are required for all Backroads guests while they are cycling. Guests can bring their own or use one of Backroads’ high-quality, custom-made Bell helmets, equipped with an easily adjustable retention system and available in two sizes for children.
