Why Do Families Choose Backroads?
Better question: Why wouldn't they?
BERKELEY, CA (September 2009)—If you want to make kids and adults happy on the same vacation, the solution is simple: A Backroads Family Trip. Backroads doesn’t just tweak its adult trip itineraries, but designs whole new experiences with families in mind. For 2010, Backroads continues to improve its family program with a host of new active adventures around the globe.
“There’s no better way to see the world than to see it actively, and that’s particularly true for families,” says Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale, who most recently took a Backroads family biking trip to Denmark with wife Liz, daughters Avery (15) and Georgia (7), and son William (10). “The freedom and flexibility of active travel means great fun and brings families closer together.”
Backroads has offered active vacations exclusively for families since 1989, and has the largest and most diverse collection of organized family trips in the active travel business. With 4 new Family Trips added for 2010 (including biking in France’s Dordogne & Bordeaux regions and Spain’s Pyréneées & Costa Brava; a spring multisport Trip in Arizona and summer biking trip to Oregon’s Crater Lake), Backroads will offer 47 family biking and multisport itineraries, with more than 300 departures.
Just for Families
Backroads Trip Leaders are chosen because of their significant experience working with and/or teaching kids. They help provide the youngest guests with the most culturally rich and interactive activities possible—mock medieval battles, chocolate making, rock climbing, language lessons, spelunking and much more! Restaurants are selected for menus and ambience with kid appeal, and picnic and camping menus are both healthy and fun. Hotels on Premiere and Casual Inn Trips offer plenty of creature comforts for adults and playful amenities for children. High-quality equipment includes helmets, custom bikes (including special kids sizes), Piccolo trailercycles and Burley trailers.
It Pays to Be Young
On trips designated just for families, kids receive the following tiered discounts when sharing a tent/room with two adults: 75% off for children 2 and under; 40% off for ages 3–6; 20% off for ages 7–10 and a 10% savings for ages 11–16. (Some restrictions apply; see Web site for details.)
