Frequently Asked Questions Family Breakaway Trips

Do children 17 and younger get the youth discount (10%)?

A: Yes. When children share a room with two adults, youths receive a 10% discount off the trip price. However, triples for older teens and adults are rarely available and a private room charge may apply if a second room is required.

What are the age restrictions for Family Breakaway Trips?

A. There must be at least one child 17 or older at time of departure. It's okay to have multiple younger siblings, as long as there's one 17 or older child. Please note that there won't be family activities or kid coordinators on the trip.

What is the minimum age for a kid to travel without parents on a Breakaway Trip?

A. Family Breakaway Trips are designed for families with older teens and 20-somethings. Guests 18 and older traveling without their parents are welcome to choose a Classic or Singles-Solos departure.

Can adults travel without kids on a Family Breakaway Trip?

A. Yes. While we would first recommend a Classic Trip, guests without families can join a Breakaway Trip if they are comfortable traveling with older teens and 20-somethings.

Will you find a roommate for guests 18 and up?

A. Yes. Backroads will endeavor to find a roommate for those guests who wish to share a room. If you sign up more than 95 days in advance of departure and no roommate is available, 50% of the private room charge will be due at final payment. Should a roommate be found within 95 days, the private room charge will be refunded. If you sign up less than 95 days in advance of departure and no roommate is available, the full private room charge will apply. If a roommate is found within 95 days, the private room charge will be refunded. On rare occasions, twin rooms consist of one bed and one rollaway or foldout sleeper. Please note that in Europe, single rooms are often smaller than double rooms. Single tents are available for an additional cost on camping trips.

Will there be flexible start times in the morning? Can the activities start an hour later in the morning?

A. This is always an option for all Backroads trips, but sometimes it means using taxis for support or missing out on a scheduled visit.
