A New Galápagos & Andes Adventure
Dear Traveler,
Have you ever dreamed of visiting the Galápagos Islands but balked at the thought of being out at sea on a boat morning, noon and night? Dream no more. Delve into the wonders of Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands in true Backroads ACTIVE style, biking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and exploring to your heart's content. We sail—and fly—between islands so we can spend more time on land exploring the wonders of the islands. We're joined by a local naturalist who shares his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for this remote and magical place. And you'll have plenty of time to kick back on the beach with your kids, relax at our lodges, or stretch your legs with a stroll in the laid-back port towns.
We'll also introduce you to the remarkable diversity of Ecuador's Highlands—with a vibrant culture and rich history, and glorious landscapes, from the snowcapped Andes to majestic volcanoes. A definite guest highlight is our stay at the authentic Hacienda Zuleta, where we're welcomed by gracious host Fernando Polanco, grandson of an Ecuadorian president. He regales us with stories about the property's pre-Columbian, Spanish and Ecuadorian history. We sample the hacienda's artisanal cheeses, and dine on quinoa soup, vegetables from the organic garden and fresh mountain trout—all made from old family recipes.
The perfect trip for your family if:
- You prefer to be active in the Galápagos Islands rather than spending most of your time onboard a charter ship
- You want to luxuriate at some of Ecuador's finest (and family friendly!) haciendas and adventure lodges
- You'd like to experience the region's diversity with multiple kid-inspired activity options, including horseback riding and pick-up soccer games
- You dream of seeing amazing Galápagos wildlife—blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and the famous finches—in action.
Ecuador's Galápagos and Andes offer all the ingredients for an extraordinary family vacation. Count on Backroads to blend those elements with our legendary trip leaders, superb routes, comprehensive planning and support to bring you the trip of a lifetime.
We hope to see you out there!

Highlights in the Highlands:
- Saddle up on your mountain bike—or horse!—and follow winding dirt roads along the slope of Imbabura Volcano to a tabletop ridge offering spectacular views of the Zuleta Valley.
- Enjoy the talents of local musicians playing handmade instruments and tour the workshop of Miguel Andrango, one of Ecuador's foremost master weavers.
- Visit Condor Huasi, a rehabilitation project managed by Hacienda Zuleta that reintroduces captive Andean condors into the wild and educates local children about the importance of preservation.
- Admire views of Cayambe Volcano on your walk to a local school—if class is in session, you can meet the kids.
- At an outdoor market, parents rub elbows with the indigenous Otavaleños and peruse booths filled with tapestries, musical instruments, ceramics and sweaters. Meanwhile, the youngsters team up with the Backroads Kid Coordinator for a scavenger hunt that encourages them to use Spanish and goodwill to negotiate for items.

Highlights in the Galápagos Islands:
- Santa Cruz Island: Visit the unique Primicias Ranch, a 600-acre private reserve where many of the islands most notable residents—giant tortoises—hang out. Kayak and snorkel at beautiful Academy Bay.
- Floreana Island: Here we take a short walk to a sea lion nursery. Young pups play in protected water, honing the skills they'll need in the open ocean. If the tide cooperates, you can join the friendly animals in the water for more snorkeling.
- Isabela Island: Hike to the caldera of Sierra Negra, the second largest in the world, and perhaps take on the challenging route to Chico Volcano, where active fumaroles and more stunning panormas await.
- Las Tintoreras: Walk and snorkel at this small island teeming with blue-footed boobies, Galápagos penguins, marine iguanas, as well as the white-tipped reef sharks for which the island is named—an unforgettable day!
